My favorite albums of 2009: #20 - #11 01.22.10 - Brandon

Other than a comment or two on the forums and in DRCs, I didn't really get any feedback on my #30 to #21 list, which leads me to believe that this list is indisputably correct. Now, onward with me being right even MORE!

20.Batty batty batty! Fruit Bats - The Ruminant Band
Such a pleasant album. SUCH a pleasant album. The Ruminant Band was released late in the summer, and that turned out to be perfect timing. There's nothing too special going on here, but it came out at just the right time to make it that great "summer album"...the one where I hear a song from it, and I look off into the distance, wistfully imagining warmer weather. When it came out, one of my friends tweeted something along the lines of, "Sitting on my balcony, drinking wine, listening to Fruit Bats". She clearly knows what's up. I also really hope that's the last time I use the word "tweeted" in this list.

19.Swear words are almost as cool as smoking. The Fucking Eagles - Midnight Sour
I fell in love with The Fucking Eagles a couple years ago when they covered my favorite Linda Ronstadt song on their first album (yes, I have a favorite Linda Ronstadt song). This is sloppy (but not sloppy) party garage rock at its finest. Unfortunately, all the videos I saw on YouTube were poor quality live performances, so check out their Myspace page if you enjoy party garage rock. This is also my favorite band name of 2009, my favorite album title of 2009, and my favorite album cover of 2009 all rolled into one. I guess I should mention 2nd place for those categories since I just now made up those awards and gave them all to The Fucking Eagles...

Favorite Band Name of 2009 Runner-Up: The Phenomenal Handclap Band
Favorite Album Title of 2009 Runner-Up: The Heavy - The House That Dirt Built
Favorite Album Cover of 2009 Runner-Up: Electric Tickle Machine - Blew It Again

18.I don't think I can dance. Passion Pit - Manners
Last year, Cut Copy was my guilty pleasure. This year, it's Passion Pit. I saw them play "The Reeling" on Jimmy Fallon, and was intrigued. After snagging their album and hearing "Sleepyhead" I was hooked. Thankfully, the album isn't just those two songs; there's plenty of other tunes that make me shake my ass while sitting down. I'm convinced I'm a better dancer in my car than I am on a dance floor.

17.I like to think her song "Stella" is about Stella Artois. Ida Maria - Fortress 'Round My Heart
I'm a bonafide sucker for a genre I like to call "chick rock." I'm sure people with sticks up their vaginas will find that term sexist, and I guess maybe I feel bad about that, but not really. Until Sahara Hotnights return with an album that isn't sub-par, Ida Maria is my new Scandinavian crush. Long live chick rock!

16.Cymbals DO eat guitars. Cymbals Eat Guitars - Why There Are Mountains
Modest Mouse meets Pink Floyd? Yes, please! I could write more here, but I feel like these guys are one of those 2009 "indie darlings" that everyone has either heard about, or knows about. Whichever the case, they are one of the indie darlings of 2009 that totally wooed me. Is "wooed" a word? I'm fairly certain it is, because I was a Pink Floyd fan in high school, which makes me an expert on these things.

15.Not to be confused with Morningwood. Morningbell - Sincerely, Severely
Prince meets...The Wrens? The question mark is because it's tough to nail down a description for Morningbell. One song uses toothbrushes as percussion, which I think is cool, but it also makes me want to really brush my teeth. Morningbell move effortlessly between soul, rockabilly, psychedelic rock...they remind me of Vampire Weekend one minute, and some obscure 90's college rock band the next. In a word (or four): I can dig it.

14.This is not Sunday morning music. The Marked Men - Ghosts
If you like your punk rock fast and catchy and from Texas, then you should check out The Marked Men. Out of the 15 songs on this album, 5 barely break the two-minute mark. This live performance video of a track on the album obviously isn't the best quality, but it'll give you a pretty good idea what you're in store for. Minutemen meets The Buzzcocks (but not as epic as that sounds).

13.Lissssssssssssp. The XX - XX
If you don't think about making sweet love while listening to this album, then you're doing it wrong. I'll let you decide if the "it" in that previous sentence refers to you listening to music, or making sweet love.

12.This album likes to rock and to roll. Reigning Sound - Love and Curses
I openly admit this album is fairly high on my list because I lived in Memphis during the heyday of the city having a rock and roll "scene" with the likes of The Oblivians, The Grifters, and The Compulsive Gamblers. Greg Cartwright was in two of those bands, and then Reigning Sound, and therefore I'm all on board, and have been for some time now. That said, I don't think you need to have any ties with Memphis to know that this is just good, old fashioned rock and roll.

11.Lapsed Catholics ARE the worst. Future of the Left - Travels With Myself and Another
I was very sad when I found out mclusky broke up, and just as happy when I found out Future of the Left was formed. Their first album, Curses, let me know everything would be a-ok, and this album let me know it can be even better. The album starts off with Arming Eritrea, and never lets up.

Can you feel the excitement building for the Top 10? I know I almost can, but not really, because I already know the results!

Pre-list fun -- #30 - #21 -- #10 - #1
